The training camp battles at the end of the Celtics’ bench should be interesting over the next few weeks. He is the type of player Boston could have used in a two-way slot last season when its depth was tested. Morgan started two playoff games for the Jazz in 2020 and played in 29 games last season. The 24-year-old can step up when needed, just as he did in Utah. Morgan’s size and defensive versatility make him a good option to win that potential battle, despite his lack of offensive upside. Kornet is not two-way eligible and will likely become a G League affiliate player while Morgan and Pinson vie for the open slot. Mathews can help to fill that void as a 6-foot-5 shooter - a role at the end of the depth chart that would bring more value than Parker’s skill set.Īs for the second two-way player, Stevens can go any number of directions, including the open market as players are waived across other training camps. Besides that pair, Boston doesn’t have many true shooting threats outside of two-way rookie Sam Hauser. As it stands right now, Payton Pritchard and Aaron Nesmith are the Celtics’ best shooters off the bench. He’s developed into a smart and confident off-ball shooter, who plays extremely hard on both ends with a solid motor. During his rookie year, he shot 41.3% in 18 contests. In 64 games with Washington last season, Mathews shot 38.4% from 3 on 3.1 attempts per game. Parker has good upside and showed some offensive flashes last season, but Boston’s roster needs shooting, which is exactly what Mathews brings. Despite his two-way eligibility, Mathews will be in legitimate contention for the Celtics’ 15th and final roster spot. Mathews was on a two-way deal with the Wizards for the last two seasons, and he remains eligible for Boston’s open slot ahead of the 2021-22 campaign. ![]() Arcidiacono is not eligible for the two-way slot. The Celtics, however, recently traded Carsen Edwards and Kris Dunn to clear up a crowded backcourt, so it wouldn’t make much sense to use that final spot on another guard. Arcidiacono has played in 183 games for the Bulls over the last three seasons, proving to be a sturdy and reliable point guard off an NBA bench. Mathews and Arcidiacono are the two most interesting options out of the invitees to take Parker’s roster spot over the next few weeks. The remainder of the deal would become guaranteed around mid-season on the league-wide guarantee date, according to a source. While $100,000 hit a guarantee date earlier this offseason, $1.1 million does not become guaranteed until opening night next month. Parker’s two-year, $2.3 million deal is non-guaranteed. The 26-year-old also has a contract that is easy to part with compared to most of his teammates. Jabari Parker is fighting for minutes as a true four in Boston’s frontcourt, although there is a good case to be made that he is the most expendable player on the 15-man roster. It’s not like there isn’t competition on the Celtics roster already, however. With that in mind, Stevens has done a great job loading up the back-end of the training camp roster with players who can contribute to winning when called upon. In other words, having the right guys at the end of your roster is all the more important. End of roster moves are often viewed as minimal and unimportant, but in today’s NBA where COVID-19 continues to have an impact, teams need all the depth they can get. The end of Boston’s roster simply did not have what it needed to step into increased roles, and two-way players Tremont Waters and Tacko Fall could not serve as reliable contributors, either. When the slew of absences hit, the Celtics’ depth was tested and promptly failed. Last season, Boston dealt with more COVID-19 related issues than any other team in the NBA. ![]()
